I have a celadon that recently has been laying odd eggs. They have a small calcium deposit on the narrow end, which on it's own I wouldn't even bat an eye at, but these narrow tips are ridiculously fragile. Just holding them sometimes causes them to crumble into the membrane and hardboiling causes them to explode through the narrow end.

Is this just an ongoing glitch? Are these eggs probably safe to hatch anyhow for meat?

These girls hatched the 18th of May last year, so they are middle age, but it's just one female out of 4 celadon and 7 females that age.

Do you give calcium supplements? I do have those issues on occasion, and it usually means they dumped the oyster shell inside their house and I didn’t notice for a while. I find the ones with that clump don’t usually hatch, and often pop the plug while in the machine and ooze egg goo out. I haven’t had any break or leak inside the bator since I stopped putting in any with that clump on top.

They eat layer feed crumbles and they only started laying a few weeks ago, can't imagine she's gone through a whole winter of calcium by now already.

Hmmm, rats. Guess those eggs will just be fed back to my broodies since we can't even hardboil them. Hate to just oitch them for the magpies to eat

I have a hen that has had an issue for a while with fragile shells and excess calcium deposits. They were super weak in the calcium deposit spot and would break like you described, and that’s only if the other hens don’t accidentally break it first. I recently started giving her daily calcium supplements based on recommendations from this forum and it has helped her a lot. After a few days of consistently giving her the supplements her shells are smooth and almost totally normal. Still a little rough but nothing like they used to be.

These were the kind that were recommended specifically and the ones I have been using
