I am curious about the way California Quail act? Like if they are flighty or timid. I just would like to know if they have any characteristic I should know or be worried about before I buy one. Thank you.
My grandfather has a few Gambel quail, which are very similar in behavior and size to the California quail. His birds are rather flightly and timid; however, they're more inclined to run than to fly up and hit their heads on the top of the pen. The birds seem to prefer having places to roost and perch, so it would be good to have places for them to do so that are large enough for their feet. Trimmed tree branches or wooden doweling rods greater than half an inch thick would be my recommendation. I would also recommend having places for them to hide when frightened as well, such as box-like shelter or something of the sort.
Overall, these aren't difficult birds to keep, and in spite of their relatively short laying season and occasional intolerance of people, they're really wonderful birds.
Yes, they are very flighty birds and will always be unless you spend tons of time with them as babies and continue throughout their life. I have had several, and in a 400 sq ft pen they still run to the back side when i am near, even with lots of hiding spots
Although it does have to do with their bloodline too, I'm in agreement with what WaterfowlWeirdo said. I must emphasize again that you need to spend time with them as babies and continue so throughout their life. If you are successful, you might get this:
If you don't, then there's a chance you'll get birds that are trying to get away from you as shown here:
