I'm getting my first Calls this Friday from a close-by breeder. I'm very excited.

I'm thinking about 2 or 3 girls. I've only ever had female ducks because the first we've ever had, 'Scovies, were ones that I picked straight run. Oddly enough, both turned out to be girls.

The only reason I bring it up is because my ducks sleep with my chickens at night. And stay with them in the winter when it snows also. Otherwise, they free-range durng the day in the summer, spring, fall, and when it isn't snowing in thw winter. On those days, they don't see the chickens until they free-range, too. (The chickens free-range in the afternoon until dusk.) We have no roosters at the moment and I'm not sure if we're getting more. Depends on these answers.

For all male Call Duck owners, are your drakes mating aggressive? Even to each other? We have a mixed flock of bantam and large fowl chickens. One of our banties is a Jap bantam, and she is VERY small. And she submits when being mated. I'm NOT going to get a male duck unless I know there won't be a problem. The day he would start mating my bantams is the day he would leave. I hear bad things about large drakes and them mating with chickens. Do bantam ducks do this as well? Is it safe to assume that all drakes will mate chickens if given the chance?

Please Respond! I'd like to know ASAP!

Unless you simply have a burning desire to breed ducks, I wouldn't mess with a drake. Some of them are sweet, but many more are perverts. Why subject yourself to the worry? If you only have hens, just add female ducks. Life will be more peaceful.

I know, but next year I'm going to want more spring babies.

And we've been doing the baby chicks thing for a while now. My family and I have decided on Call ducklings. If I get ducklings, I'm going to have males. And I'm not sure if I can part with them (although I'd find a way) let alone find a home for them. That would be a problem. Otherwise, given the lucky choice now, I'm going to simply stick with females. We can buy eggs from this breeder next spring. And I'll have to deal with it then.

Thank you for your honesty. And for getting back to me so quickly.

well i dont have calls but ive had them and they act just like anyother duck drake i keep my ducks with my chickens int the fall and winter and the ducks do their thing and the chickens do theirs the only mingling is when i feed and at night.....otherwise no issues at even with the ducks i buy from outside sources.....but my ducks are raised around chickens and my chickens around ducks but like i said even when i buy there are really no problems the chickens give me more problems than my ducks
