(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We were given 8 chickens by Tractor Supply in 2012 while we were fostering our grandchildren. 7 survived and I named them the Laying Ladies.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Seven hens, 1 Turken rooster, and a game cock rooster that showed up at my hen house unexpectedly. Since my neighbors said he didn't belong to them, we figured he escaped from someone else and put him in his own small pen to protect him from my aggressive Mister T and the hens from him.

(3) What breeds do you have?
2 Americana, 1 Dominique, 1 white barred leghorn, 2 Sapphire Gems, a black Australorp and the random Turken rooster. We ordered 3 varieties from the hatchery that will arrive in June: Speckled Sussex, Black Australorp, and Bielefelder.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Eggs for breakfast! They eat scraps, they till up and clear yards, and they are just fun to watch.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Rabbits are my passion. We were without employment for 2 years. We learned our lesson. Depending on our Lord, stay out of debt (thankfully we were already!) and raise our own food!

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We have been married since January 1, 1980. Allen is my soul mate and best friend. We have 10 children, 5 boys and 5 girls. 12 grandchildren now. We lost our youngest son before he was born but were blessed with the youngest girl as a comfort the next year.
Allen has a Yorkie, a German Shepherd and a Harley.
I have 3 New Zealand bucks and 10 does. Currently we have 4 litters for a total of 31 kits and 5 expecting any day now.
We also were given 2 Pekin ducks to replace 2 dead chicks by Tractor Supply. They hatched 14 ducklings 3 weeks ago and Allen helped a 15th duckling 🐥 escape a wet shell. It survived and joined the family for a total of 17 ducks. We have ordered 15 more to arrive in June but 5 other varieties.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Google! Trying to build brooders and found a thread on Mother Heating Pads. Joined because I love to learn from others as much more than by trial and error. Looks like a lot of knowledge and wisdom in here and everyone is genuinely interested in learning and helping others.
