How many calories per day does a chicken need?

I'm aware there are variables such as weight vs rooster or hen or chick vs laying or not laying.

It doesn’t really work like that with chickens... leave the food out, they will eat when they need to. Chickens instinctually fill their crops, and it takes hours to seep down into the stomach to digest. They know when and when not to fill their crops.

Not that simple, actually that is the problem. I've had a sick rooster that doesn't fill his crop and hasn't for awhile. I was in a situation the he needed some energy and was trying to figure up a sugar and electrolyte recipe in a hurry and don't know how much to give him with a syringe down the pipe. I just had to wing it and what I made helped him but don't want to be caught with my pants down again so to speak.

If I had an ideal of what kind of calories a chicken uses per day, I can figure up how much sugar to use in this recipe. Don't want to over do it since too much sugar can cause runny poo, exactly want I didn't need.
