Hello all!
I am new to this site and desperately need your help. I live in the town limits of North Beach, MD. I was raised by my dad who always kept a good garden and to that I do every year. I want to expand my abilities by owning at least one but at most 3 chickens just to provide fresh eggs and eventually chicken dinner. I go through eggs and milk consistently daily. I have a large yard to provide room to run and grasses and bugs for them to eat when not eating feed. I even have an old kids playhouse that I would convert into the coop with a fence around it as I used it owning dogs prior. I live in North Beach and the town ordinance says no resident can own livestock or poultry. We are a small town that is all about the Friday night farmers market and growing locally and I feel that this would fit in with that ideology that they have. My neighbors have wondered as well about chickens and other agricultural interests and I'm seeking information.
Here are my questions that I have in regards to my situation:
I have heard that if you name a chicken that it becomes a pet and not livestock/poultry, essentially bypassing that law. Is that remotely true or valid to any extent?
I was told about the "right to farm" what does that entail, does that include chickens on a very small scale? And if so, how would I go about asserting my right to farm and obtaining paperwork if needed to get chickens?
Is there any information that allows me to get chickens just so I can provide for myself and my family?
As well, if there is no other way and I had to/ wanted to appeal the "no poultry" law how would I do so?
My garden would be much nicer to have eggs omelette style with my tomatoe squash peppers etc that I will grow this year.
I want to thank you in advance for having this site and forum to get questions answered and I hope that someday soon I will have my own little self sustained mini farm to provide for myself. And I hope this also helps others looking for the same information.
