Good morning y'all!
My husband and I just came back from vacation yesterday and noticed that my bantam had two brand new baby chicks with her. I'm assuming they are about 2 days old at this point. She seems to be very protective of them, which is good. They are in the fenced in area with my other hens and one Rooster. They all seem to be leaving mama and babies alone. But since this is my very first time experiencing this I have a few questions.
1. I'm in Georgia and right now it has been between 50-70s for the weather. The mother should keep them warm enough, right?
2. Do I need to separate the 3 of them from the rest of the flock for a while until the chicks get older? Biggest reason I ask this is because of food. If I put chick formulated food into the pen with everyone else, they will eat it all and not their laying food. Or will mama find enough food for the babies while they're still very young.
i want to give these babies the best chance of survival. TIA!
