Can a single chicken lay more than one color?

I have NHR, barred rock, Easter Eggers, Whiting True Blue and one very old Speckled Sussex. We normally get a mix of clear blue, blueish green and brown eggs, with a very occasional pinkish brown from the SS.

Today, we got a pure white egg.

Who should we suspect?

The whiting true blue if she’s not laid eggs before. However, I have an SS that just started laying very pale eggs. So much so that I had to compare it to a Leghorn egg to see that it had the tiniest amount of tint to it. One thing you can do is to crack it open and look at the color on the inside of the shell. If it’s pinkish brown it’s probably from your SS. If it is bluish, then it would be from the WTB.

They have all been laying eggs right along for anywhere between six months and five years.

Any chicken that lays brown eggs can lay a white one on occasion: the brown goes on the shell last, so if the chicken lays the egg a bit early, it might not have gotten the brown layer on the outside.

If that's what it is--the shell might also be a bit thinner than usual.

Sorry, I missed that in your first post. Let us know the color of the inside of the shell. That should give you a hint who’s egg it is. One of them has just ran out of ink. :D
