I personally like the biggest, fattest, friendliest ones the best.

Whooaaa!!! : calm down ladies.

I'm a little disappointed. I ordered these babies from Welp's...which I researched and found out they reputable hatchery. My daughter was wanting to show them for 4 H and I guess they are not worth a darn. Well... live and learn. I guess they will be "showable" in our backyard

Next time I'll get your advice before I fill my coop up. I'm not too worried about it. Hopefully she'll still have a good looking chicken to take to our county fair. I don't want to travel across country entering birds or anything, if she doesn't win anything, we know our chickens are winners in our eyes.

I would not be so quick to toss them out (figuratively speaking). While it is true that it is unlikely that you will get true show quality from a hatchery, the birds may be fine for 4H. It all depends upon your specific area. On the other hand, if you really want your youngsters to learn about poultry correctly then they should be consulting a SOP (Standard of Perfection) and breeding toward that. Starting with typical hatchery stock will not be the best plan. 4H advisors in your area should be a great source of information and can help you make good choices on how best to start them out.

This is cattle and hog country...not many people tinker with chickens...unless they eat them. So maybe we can get lucky with our poor grade chickies.

They are still lovely and we love them no matter what. I've never seen a lot of chickens at our fair. They are fun and that's what matters to us right now!!

I waited for almost two years to get those birds from an excellent breeder up here in New England. He has some of the best buffs in the US and routinely wins even at the national level. I'm not sure that I will actually show them but I really wanted the size and type these birds have. I almost broke down and bought birds from other sources that were not the same quality but am so glad I waited!
