Can cochin bantams be kept with "standard" size chickens?

Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum and am getting ready to place an order from Nature's Hatchery. Before I order though, I was wondering if cochin bantams can live amongst other bigger chickens. Would the bigger chickens pick on the smaller ones?

Any advice on this subject would be great!!

No matter what the size or breed, a flock of chickens are going to establish a pecking order. So yes, they will pick at each other for a while. I've had no problem mixing bantams with standard breeds. Right now, in my layer flock, its a little cochin banty who rules EVERYONE.

The only birds I don't mix are Silkies, but thats because Silkies are more vulnerable.

Good luck

Chantele!

I only have 1 Cochin bantam, in a group of 10 LF. But she is a feisty little devil! She chases the big hens around daily.

I do make sure that there are 2 feeders so she doesn't get crowded out, and that the water is low enough for her to get to easily.

If they are all raised together it should be okay. Just make sure they can get enough food and water.

you will find this site so useful. now i am still kinda new at all this but for the last year we have had our cochin bantam "dora" in with our standards and they get along great. She will even snuggle right in with the 2 roosters to sleep for the night. I also have to say our cochin is the BEST CHICKEN EVER!! my 4 year old daughter can pick her up and will take her for rides in the basket of her bike and Dora will just take it. she carries that chicken everywhere and the chicken acts more like a dog then a chicken. we have over 40 chickens and she is the best one we ever had. i just wish i would have picked up a few more at the chicken show!
