My hens are picky about which grasses they will eat they do prefer the wider grasses. Ok so I have to much free time on my hands, maybe. I watch which grasses and plants that they will eat on their own when free ranging and feed them those types. Chemicals? we don't need no stinking chemicals man
If you need to fertilize your lawn switch to an organic fertilizer, they are usually chicken poop based. leave the dandilions your chickens will eat them for you, they love the weeds.
I do prefer hay as it has been grown for feed purposes and i remind them that this is good stuff the goats love it. they really dont eat any of it they just nest on it. As for bedding pine shaving are more absorbant than dried grass, easier clean up and it dont mat down.
