Hello BYC, I am a new duck owner only owning two drakes. Recently I have been able to hear my ducks quietly breathing. I can only hear it when it is quiet outside and my ear is next to or about six inches away from there bill. They might have been doing this there whole life and I am just noticing or this could be a recent thing. They aren't struggling to breath or anything I can just slightly hear them doing it. I also give them a deep water dish so they can dunk there heads. I also change their water dish three times a day. They are mix breed cayuga and mallard, so maybe breed has to do with this? I have also read that heat could be the cause of this because until today it has been in the nineties all summer where I live.So is this normal and I am just paranoid or a potential issue?

If you put your head up close to any animal's mouth you should be able to hear them breathe. That is natural and normal because air flow has sound (the wind for example). It is no different than if your head was right next to someone else's and you heard them breathing. Now if you hear them breathing standing by them (usually excluding heat because they will pant to cool off), they sound congested or appear to be having trouble breathing then that is cause for concern.

Thanks for the fast reply this really is a relief to read. I definitely can't hear them standing up. The only time I hear them breathing is when I sit down besides them or they are a few inches away from me. Once again thanks 😊
