So my ducks have been laying on these eggs, and today should be the day they hatch. Since I want them to imprint on my family, I want to bring them in. When I went out to the barn, I put an egg to my ear and listened. I heard peeping and some sort of rhythmic tapping on the eggshell, but they haven't pipped yet, and it's been around six hours since I heard them chirping and tapping. Is it ok to bring them inside under a heat lamp? How long until they will pip/hatch?

All poultry chicks must get into the correct position to turn inside the egg and cut the big end of the egg off by slowly turning it's body inside of the shell while tapping the eggshell with its egg tooth. This is why you lay eggs on their side at lock down. Picking up a pipping egg and confusing or bum fuzzling the chick inside is a very good way to get a very bad hatch.

I don't recommend that you try to get your birds to imprint on you or your family unless you are prepared to stay with the new peeps 24-7

Yes, we are all home very often, so we will be able to have them imprint on us. When do you think they will hatch?

They won't imprint to you as your thinking....I raise and hatch many Ducklings and it does not work that way...You would need to sleep and breath Duckling in order for them to totally imprint on you...They will imprint on each other...

Strange. Last year I raised five ducklings inside and they all imprinted on me, and I didn't stay near them all too often.
