I've seen variations of this question and variety of responses, but I thought my situation unique enough so I thought I'd put it out there to you all.
Some time ago I had built a 'large' coop at the end of their large run area - which was really intended to handle both my 4 Golden comets (the youngest of the flock) and my EE Rooster and his two EE hens. The way it worked out is that while the rooster and his hens would visit the large coop and the EE hens will lay in the nesting boxes - they still return to their original coop when evening comes.
So, what I was wondering is what if during the day once all the chickens were in the large run area (the end of it is where the large coop is) I simply closed off access to the tunnel that leads to the side of they yard where the rooster and his ee hens coop was?
Would the EE rooster and his EE hens just head over to the open and available large coop on their own?
Not trying to make it difficult on the EE rooster and his EE girls, but it would be a whole lot easier just to have one coop to clean (and it is easily large enough to provide plenty of roosting space for them all (which is why I had built it in the first place). Since they've both been inside the large coop throughout the day in the past, it wouldn't be an unfamiliar space.
Would this approach work?
