I bought some hatching eggs yesterday from a local hatcher and he told me he washed them... And i was like wont that be a BIG no no!? And he said no they hatch fine! And i said in my head that this guys nuts! Do you think i will get any chicks from these eggs? Please tell me i can cause i paid $6.00 i know it doesnt sound that bad but I'm expecting chicks and this was just a curiosity question..can refrigerated eggs hatch? Thanks

I wouldent recommend washing or for sure not to put hatching eggs in the fridge..How ever! I will say that I have on a whim hatched eggs that were in the fridge for 3 days. Not a great hatch but some did indeed hatch..

Most of what you read, says NEVER wash a hatching egg... I recently read where one BYC member always washes hatching eggs, and has wonderful hatches. So, IMO, don't believe every thing you read, and just because everybody says this is the way you must do it, doesn't necessarily make it so. Happy hatching!

It's better to store eggs for hatching at 55-60F. The 40F refrigerator is too cold, but then? People have successfully hatched eggs from Whole Foods, Trader Joe's and similar grocery stores. So, yeah, you can likely hatch a few from a frig. But it isn't likely the best way.

As for washing, lots and lots of people sanitize all their fertile eggs. Many commercial hatcheries sanitize or wash all their eggs and they have to hatch successfully as a business to stay profitable. There is a school of thought that says they'd rather have clean eggs in that incubator environment than all that poop and bacteria.

So, what have we learned? Not much. Different strokes for different folks. I've hatched eggs straight from a clean nest and also hatched chicks from eggs that I've had to wash. Shrug.

Thanks so much!! You helped a ton!

Thanks so much! You helped a ton as well! Thanks for all the information i had no idea! Thank you

Preferably eggs should not be washed, but as they are from a local breeder the chances of a good hatch despite washing are pretty good. And I have on a whim bought eggs from the local co-op and hatched 11 out of the dozen and they were refrigerated for days. That was fun.
