I have a broody that is itching to get outside. She has been locked up in the coop with her now 1 week old chicks (1 because of super cold temps, and 2 to keep other hens away from the babies)..

It is sunny and 60 here today. Would it hurt to let her out to range? I know her chicks would follow and I do NOT want to seperate her from them..

This is my first broody and I just want to make sure its "normal" for her to want to take them out so young.. Sorry I know this is a silly ?!!

Of course you can.. Just be sure the other hens don't hurt the babies.

Their mother will keep them warm when they get cold. Don't worry about it too much.

I will keep the other hens up while they are out. They are just so tiny it blows my mind. When I raised "momma hen" I was nervous taking them out at 4 weeks..lol

And yes today we get 60, then 30 & 40 the rest of the week...

It's so cold here! Brr.. It's going up to 10 for the next few days though - which would be around 52. I'm really hoping winter isn't as bad as last year.

Agreed. And I have pics somewhere of my broody with her chicks out running around and there was still some patches of snow on the ground.
