under my broody silkie? she has been trying to sit for a few weeks and I finally gave in and let her have 3 eggs. its been a few days and she is doing a very good job but I fear she is young and this will not be good for her health. I just hatched a chick yesterday (from her egg actually) and was wondering if I can switch her eggs with the chick. Also she is still living with her 2 other silkie hen mates and with daily silkie roo visits from 11 am to 7pm. They are a very close flock and no one is aggressive at all should I separate her from the others when I give her the chick ?

how is the best way to go about this or should I not attempt it at all?

Thanks

I'd say that unless she has been setting for at least two weeks, it might not work.

Guess it wouldn't hurt to try but I'd do it in the early morning when you can watch for a few hours or more.

I have given lots of chicks to broody hens. Last year Pigie set set for a grand total of 4 days before her eggs hatched.

However there are times that a broody will reject a chick that she did not hatch. This year I placed 3 sets of incubator chicks with mommas. This last set I got stuck raising in a brooder. Every hen I tried refused them. They were fine till one of the chicks would stick it's head out. The potential momma would start pecking at it, so I removed the chick.

As long as you watch the hens reaction, it shouldn't hurt to try. Don't just stick the chick in and leave. I lost a chick last year because a hen scalped it.

If I were you, I'd try, but the other posters are correct that there is no way to know whether she will accept the chick without trying. Silkies are generally very good brooders and mothers, so I think it's worth a shot. You should know pretty quickly whether she will accept it. I gave my broody some store bought chicks and knew within about 5 minutes that all would be well, and they are dong fine now, a few days later. And I did it around 10 AM, even though the best time is after dark: steal the eggs and slip the chicks in from her back side.

What isn't good for their health is setting eggs that are not going to hatch. They can stay there for months, and they can easily die of starvation. They won't get off the nest to eat and drink much, once a day if you are lucky, and over the long term, that isn't healthy. They typically lose a lot of weight while brooding.

As for leaving her with the others, that is really a personal choice. Some on here feel they should not be separated, that it is best to let the strong survive and write off the weak. Others feel the mama and chicks should be protected from the others, just in case. Frankly, if your flock is not aggressive, I would try them together. In my case, mama and 4 chicks are doing just fine with the other 3 hens in the flock, and they aren't even the same breed. Actually, the mama is the smallest hen, and not high in the pecking order. There is no roo in this flock at present, but there were several when I did the same thing last year, and they also did fine.

I do not own a bator and do not plan to hatch and raise chicks except under a broody, as I feel this is the natural way, and the chicks do better being raised by a mama. Just to let you know that my opinions are slanted this way.

anyway thank I am going to try it tomorrow and see how it goes. I have ameraucana chics hatched at the same time maybe I will try 2 for company or will the one silkie be ok since the reality is that the ameraucana wont get to stay with the silkies?

Personally, I like the two for company idea.

Let us know how it goes.

well I put just the one silkie in cause I would have to seperate the ameraucana later and I was afraid they would get attatched. She is doing great, I slipped it under broody and took the eggs she had and put them in the bator. she took to the chick right away. the other hens checked it out, they all ate and now it is sleeping comfortably under momma. I am checking on a 1/2 basis to make sure all stays well

so stinking cute btw!

Oh please watch them close. I just finished with 2 posts that the hen scalped and killed the 2 chicks that were put under her and the other the chick was already dying and could not be saved.

Mine turned on her own chicks so I took them. Very sad.
PLEASE watch them and pull at the first sign of her pecking it on the head.
Good Luck and I hope it works out better for you.

the ones that hatched in the incubator hatched I put those 2 with the other babies and hen, this would of made the 2nd night and 2nd day they have been with her, however when ever I came home from work just a few mins ago, I seen the 2 that hatched in the incubator laying at the door of the pen. I honestly thought from a distance that they were headless. As I got closer I noticed just bloody and both moved. I brought them in the house and took a warm rag and cleaned them up just a bit to get a better idea of the damage. From their eyes back and their necks are completlely bald and pecked! one looks to have a place that is still bleeding, I would take pic's but You dont wanna see. Their both alert and can walk. ones a lil weaker than the other.

I'm compleltely lost as of this point on what to do, I've gave them water and food and have a heat lamp on them. The only meds that I have on hand as far as ointment is terrimycin eye oinment or triple antibodic oinment and I dont know if that would hurt or help them..

I feel horrible its my fault for stickin them in with her, but she's taken babies that aren't hers before... Please Help if you can. Thanks

oh thank you. I have been checking and the chick is nicely tucked under Mama's wing. it is her and the roos biological chick and I think they know it. Anyway everything has been good here she seems happy, the others dont seem to mind and the roo was doting over hger being curious but not at all mean. I will keep a close eye. Its time for Fuzzy Apples's bed time (that is what my ds named the white silkie roo)
