So i have a pygmy herd of 5 (3 does 1 buck and 1 wether) my buck was listed pygmy in the paper so i went to pick him up and the woman had like 3 in a very small nasty muddy dog pen so i took him to save him (he was like 4 days old at the time i bottle fed him) he is the nicest little feller ever but he does not look pygmy to me he is slim and boney more like a nigerian. He is miniature but does not look full pygmy so i'm thinking of buying a new full pygmy buck and wethering my buck he is 10 months old he has really big testes would it be possible to band him being so big ?

You can neuter him any time...He may keep some of his Billy traits and smells but he will be infertile....use the elastrator if you can get "them" into it...otherwise call the vet and they will take care of the deed.

You can neuter a fairly big buck with an elastrator, but there is a trick to it. First pull the scrotum through the band, then work the testes through one at a time. Just make sure you don't get a teat caught.

I have neutered lots of older bucks. People call me because they let their big boy pet stay intact thinking he would stay his cute sweet self only to find out later that wasnt the case and they dont know what to do and heard that I can help.

I think the oldest was 6 years old. I had to get a calf bander as the regular goat bander doesnt usually work past 5 or 6 months. It takes practice to know how to manipulate the testicles into the band but they all fit just fine.

The bigger boys actually seem to have less trauma when you would think it should be the opposite since there is more there.

In my experience even the oldest boys after about 4 months to a year loose the bucky long coat, all have lost the smell completely and pretty much all of them have lost the desire to even act bucky. They arent all wether and still keep their size, and masculine body features(buck head, muscles etc.) that they have gained up until the point you fixed them.

Its worth it and then they can live as part of the heard after about 4 months(to be sure they are done) and be a regular goat.
