Can I use this as bedding in the brooder?

Willow's Meadow :

Just wanted to make sure it's safe for the chicks: http://www.tractorsupply.com/cozy-n-fresh-trade-natural-pine-pellets-20-lb--2181014

While people have had a lot of success using wood pellets as litter for chickens I prefer just pine shavings.

The peletizing process depending upon who does it sometimes involves the use of other materials in addition to the wood, there are also various chemical compounds formed as the result of the temperatures and moisture used in the process.

I refer you to: http://annhyg.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/short/53/8/797 for further information.

Ohh, pine shavings are cheaper (here a Leggett) and easy to clean. I dunno about pine pellets or whatever.

I stick with staw or hay, when I clean out the coop I throw that mixture into the compost pile and use it later on in the flower beds and gardens.

The Cozy 'n Fresh pellets will be fine. I've used them before and like them. They have a fresh scent(not perfumery)to them. You will not smell poop in the brooder. It will have a clean chick smell. The pellets are safe for all animals. I would wait at least a week before putting them on pellets till their feet/toes strengthen. The pellets can also be mixed in with pine shavings for a little extra absorbency.

I have used them & loved it. I would do as the above stated until they are stronger.
