Can I use this in the coop?

I am wondering if I can use the Ortho Ecosense brand outdoor insect killer inside my coop. It contains pyrethrins 0.01%, canola oil 1.0%. I would love to spray my coop down with something now that I have dusted my chickens. They are 9 weeks. If not, what do you all suggest?

I wouldn't use it. Chemicals are just to risky, IMO. If you want something to help keep the bugs at bay (whatever they may be), I would strongly recommend getting some food grade DE and sprinkling it all over your coop. My chickens even get a sandbox with a DE, dirt, and sand mixture to take dustbath's in. I've never once had an issue with mites or lice because I use DE in the coop and dustbath area.

I use stall dry under my litter (pine shavings) and just put a playsand/stall dry mixture for dust bathing in there. I found some mites on myself after being in the coop, so I have already dusted with poultry dust and would like to spray down the coop to get rid of what is there and then I will maintain with DE. Just want to get something to get rid of what I have first. I would spray the coop in the morning after they are out for the day.

I too would try the DE first. I put a layer down before I lay the shavings in. Remember, you will need to re-dust chickens after 5 days or so. Poultry dust only kills live buggies, it has no effect on mite/lice eggs.

I have used dairy spray in the past, but Stall Dry (which has Clay and DE in it) works the best for me.

I know it says Canada, but I bought this same product at TSC.

I swept out all the shavings and sprinkled the Stall Dry all over the floor, and the floors of the nests, and the top of the nest boxes. Then I put fresh shaves in the nests and floor. Within one day, all the bugs were gone. Now when I go in the henhouse, I might see one or two flies flying around, but none of the swarms that I saw before. I don't even see the wasps that used to go in there. And as far as I know, mine don't have mites.

I also sprinkled some in the pen area as well.

Some people use Sevin dust, but really, I like Dry Stall or straight DE the best. IF you can't find DE, you can probably find Stall Dry. That's what I used the first time and it worked really well.

I've been using DE in my coop for the last 8 months, and I've seen only two bugs in there in that whole time. I use DLM and I just cleaned the pine shavings out yesterday (three wheel barow's full). No bugs at all.

I can't find Stall Dry here, and I haven't found any DE locally either (and I refuse to pay the shipping!!). I have started using Sweet PDZ in the coop and poop pit, which dries everything out......no smell! No wet poo= no interested flies. I also use Orange Guard in the coop......spray down the roosts, walls, nest boxes, cracks, and anything else I feel might be harboring insects. (Thanks Speckledhen!) You can buy that at Ace and it is safe for kids, pets, and around food. LOVE IT! It smells nice and citrusy too. Then I also use Poultry Protector and spray our chickens down with it every couple of weeks. It contains a natural enzyme that breaks down the bodies of mites and lice. I spray it on their necks, under wings, and on their vent area, and work it into their feathers.

I am all about prevention, but don't want to do anything that contains chemicals which could pass into the eggs or harm us or the chickens!

HTH!

Something else I'd never thought of... Great idea!
