I have a sweetheart of a broody who is just a little too sweet. She lets other hens nest with her while they lay their eggs. I've lost 3 eggs so far to breaking, and she has 6 left. I put more bedding under her to try to pad the eggs, but the shells are all sticky and crusty with the yolks of the other 3. I was wondering if it's ok to wash these in plain warm water, so they don't have anything on them to peck at? Also, they're marans eggs so they're hard to candle as it is, without gunk on the outside.

I would not use water, but you can scrub them with a cloth or slightly abrasive sponge.

You also may want to consider moving mom and her eggs to a more private location.
