I let one of my silkie hens hatch out 4 chicks last weekend. I like to use medicated chick starter on my chicks. Is it ok to feed this to Mamma hen?
Now I am going to feel guilty taking them away from her. When should I do that?

I don't know if it is just me but those hen raised babies sure a bit happier and more content than the incubator ones??

Thanks

You are right; those little chicks raised by their Mama are much happier than those that are incubated and brooded by us humans. As for letting Mama hen eat the medicated feed, it does not hurt a thing. I do the same at my house and right now I have one white Silkie hen with 7 little white babies of her own; I have a pocelain Silkie hen with her 4 little babies. Everything is fine with them all!

I usually wait to take my little ones away from their Mama either when they are old enough to be on their own and fully feathered or if I have someone wanting to buy them that will be brooding them together properly, making sure that they get the amount of heat needed to keep them comfortable until they get fully feathered.
