Can someone tell me how to turn the spellcheck off on gmail?

My mother tongue, Afrikaans, is not on the list of languages listed on gmail, so when I type in Afrikaans it translates half the words into Dutch or I can't see anything for squiggly red lines. It's really irritating! I've looked everywhere, but I can't find an option to turn the spell check off. Isn't it an option or am I not seeing it?

It's more likely to be your browser that's got the spellcheck option enabled. Which browser are you using?

We're using Safari. Have been for awhile, but this problem only started recently. Gmail upgraded...

weird, I've never seen spell check or auto correct in gmail and I have it turned off on my browser. I would check the browser settings anyway and see if that helps, maybe the upgrade kicked it in.
