Trying to figure out what is wrong with one of our hens- here is what I've got:
- 2 yr old Red Star hen
-lethargic for the last several days- isolates herself, stands (no sitting) around puffed up, tail slightly down
-little to no appetite, even for treats. Drinks little.
-abdomen/rear end looks and feels full, but not hard and no discernible hard lumps
-not laying
- all poop is diarrhea, mostly white. No blood or mucus that I've spotted. Not yellow.
-crop feels fine- not hard
- no external parasites that I can see; she has a bare spot on her back at the base of her tail that I think is from getting pecked but not sure
- otherwise looks fine on the outside- eyes clear, comb normal

Other (maybe) clues: We had at least one- maybe more- soft/no shelled eggs before this started; can't be positive they were from this hen though. The other two hens in our flock are fine, save for some bare spots on backs and rumps (no rooster; this group has always liked to feather pick so I have assumed it is from that)

Thinking this is egg peritonitis or egg binding, though with no yellow droppings or a palpable mass in the abdomen I'm not sure. I've isolated her indoors the last 24 hrs with electrolyte water and fresh veggies in addition to her regular feed but no improvement. Any ideas? Thanks!

I would check inside her vent 1-2 inches with a rubber glove for a stuck egg. It may be egg yolk peritonitis from what you are describing. It is very common at 2-3 years in production birds. White droppings contain a lot of uric acid (or urine.) Ascites or water in the belly is seen with EYP sometimes. These kinds of symptoms are quite common, and sometimes you just have to try to keep them comfortable and wait and see.

Thanks Eggcessive. No stuck egg but I did give her TLC as suggested and eventually figured out it was a sour crop. Treated for that and good news is that she now seems recovered, although a lot skinnier! I appreciated your response.
