We had a hen die suddenly and now we have one. Our hen is 1 year and 2 weeks. I just read in Storey's Chicken Guide that Foster Mama's is possible. They mentioned 4 immediate signs that our hen would take 2 new chicks as her own. Has anyone had success? We plan to introduce at night and hope she likes the new company. Thanks for any insight, Sarah

It isn't likely that she will accept them as her own unless she is broody, meaning staying on the nest day and night as if to hatch eggs. It would be wrong to tell you it won't work -- chickens are individuals. But I'm afraid it is mroe likely she will attack and injure or even kill them. If you pruchase, chicks, I would be prepared to raise them separately until they are about her size.
