Hello! I am getting some new pullets soon and I think Wyandotte hens are so beautiful! But I don’t know if it’s a good idea to raise them in South Carolina. The summers here are brutal, maxing out at the low hundreds and very high humidity. My coop and run are fully shaded, and I have the ability to run fans if needed.

I know that Wyandottes are heavy feathered, so I was wondering how heat hardy they are, and if they would do well where I live. Thanks!

I have silver laced wyandottes here in California. Our summers get up to 112 degrees in the shade and they have been fine, now are 3 years old. I have the coop and run under mature oak trees, so they have shade and I provide them lots of water and even ice on the hottest days. They should be fine with you too! Get them! They are beautiful. I think the specked Sussex is more striking however. Good Luck! ;)

Probably be ok.
I'll bet the humidity is brutal too.

Deep all day shade is best but....
I give a dose of Sav-a-Chick electrolytes/vitamins about once a week during heat waves.
It really seems to help....started this after they saved a heat stroked hen once.
Can mix up a smaller amount, just wrap the packet tight and store in a dry cool place.
Always have plain water available too.

BIG(9x14x2") chunks of ice last all day for wading, sitting, and sipping.
Much more useful to the chickens than frozen foods and treats.

Make space in your freezer!

Thank you! I do have some electrolytes that I give them on hot days, and I can always freeze a gallon if I need to. Thanks for the help everyone!
