I have a sussex and she is such a smart girl. She was hatched all bar 2 of my chickens and shes been broody every year. BUT if she sees you swap eggs - infertile for firtile that were to hatch soon as she had been on the infirtale eggs ages - then she knows they arent hers and kills them :(
we learnt from this a past year and when swapping eggs we cover her eyes so she sees nothing and no problems since. BUT this year shes getting a bit old and hasnt knowticed that she is kicking the eggs out from underneath her. I keep putting them back under and shes all defensive of the nest so she hasnt abandoned them. IF they dont hatch i want to get some day old chicks and swap the eggs for them or she will be broody for months and nothing puts her off it. I remeber being told by a farmer you can give her wiskey and she will go to sleep and then wont knowtice a thing. Can you do this? how do you give her the wiskey? how long should it take to take affect? and do you think she would then accept the chicks???
THANKS :D
