I am a new, proud owner of 8 sweet chickens. :) All of my sweeties were purchased from Atwoods. I've scoured the internet and google images trying to identify them. I'm fairly sure they are all girls... they were in a bin labled "lg breed pullets" and were all banded with wing tags. The breeds though have me a bit puzzled. I'm new to raising chickens, but here are my best educated guesses. Please, if you know better, post and let me know if I'm wrong. The tailfeathers of my new 4w olds are all much longer than the older girls were at 4 weeks. Tell me that's a breed characteristic and not an indicator of a roo vs a pullet?

1) Rhode Island Red
2) Rhode Island Red
3) Barred Rock
4) Rhode Island or Easter Egger?
5) Sexlink
6) I have 3 that are identical to this one. They are all 8 weeks old today. I'm thinking sexlinks?

1 & 2 are Production Reds
3 is a Barred Plymouth Rock
4 is a Buff Orpington (I see pink/white legs)
5 could be a black sex link
6 - check soles of feet, if pink Australorp, if Yellow Jersey Giant.

All are girls.

Thank you all for your replies. I went out to check her feet... checked the feet of all 3 that are in question of being JG or BA. I see some yellow. Does this mean they are JG's? (Pardon the girls in the background. They have all just recently taken to lounging on my patio furniture lol)

I also snapped another pic of the birds in question. They all have this golden tint on their chests. Does this help narrow it down to JG or BA?

The first one is a Jersey Giant. The second would be a black sex link like poster bellow said. She has a lot of gold which made me hesitate, but I do believe she is a BSL :)
The gold splashes point more to a black sex link than either JG or BA. :)

Thank you so much. I thought so too. I don't think my 1st picture was very good to post bc it didn't show that part well enough with the angle she was facing, sorry. All 3 of the girls in question have various degrees of that gold splashing on their chests. The one pictured, has the most. :) So as of right now I'm going to go with the following...

1) Production Red
2) Production Red
3) BPR
4) BO
5) BSL
6) BSL x 3

Yippie! I'm happy to be closer to knowing the details of my ladies. Are these generally good layers? Anything I should look out for with one breed vs another? I'm doing my homework now that I have a better understanding of what breeds I'm dealing with. Absolutely love this website. SO much info and such nice people! :)

All are great layers. BO is probably your least best. She may go broody and try to hatch eggs for you. The rest will be all about production. :)

Your BR & BO will probably be your most friendly.

So #6 has gold in her as well? Must have been the angle!
