I was given this hen and I am wondering if anyone can tell me what she is? She's beautiful and has been laying almost everyday.

I'd say she has a lot of royal palm in her. Maybe some bronze or red as well. Hopefully someone who knows more about color genetics will chime in.

She looks more like a calico palm to me. Royal palms are white trimmed in black the calicos are about the same but have light brown or tan mixed in the white. I have royal palm toms they look like calicos after a good roll in the dirt though lol I'm not at all a turkey expert lol I'm just learning. But in my opinion it looks like a calico palm.

She is a Sweetgrass! Sweetgrass is her color, turkey is her breed.

I had never heard of sweetgrass turkeys so I looked them up. What I found said that sweetgrass is another name for calico palms? Do you no if they are the same? I'm just getting into turkeys I have just regular royal palms standard black and white. Someone tried to sell me one like this swearing it was a standard. I'm so confused lol

I'm going with calico on this one. A calico is a royal palm with a red gene. A sweetgrass is a royal palm with no Narragansett genes. The two look rather similar, and many people call calicoes sweetgrass, or even use both names "calico sweetgrass.". Calicoes have the same patterning as royal palms, just with a reddish wash, sweetgrass look like they should have a red gene, but they don't. Sweetgrass patterning is a little more interesting than calicoes, IMO.

Thank you for explaining. I read that sweet grass and calicoes were the same if you google sweet grass. If you google calico it doesnt say aka sweet grass and the pictures are obviously different. What are standard palms bred to to get sweetgeass? I now dout the information I have read lol.
