Ok so i'm not in lala land i knew duck poo smelt but i had one of the ducks in for a cuddle tonight and it smelt like something had crawled up his bum and died

(sorry)
is there anything i can give them to reduce the smell and save my nose? It's not as bad in their pen/run as i wash the run down daily and clean the pen out twice a week. It's more for when i have them in for cuddles

Do they have poo on their bottoms? can they bathe anytime they want? You might try adding ACV in their drinking water 1 Tab to 1 gal. maybe thats why I haven't noticed mine smelling.

My bird's poo smells much less when they have more forage in their diet than Commercial Feed.

No it's not poo on them it's just the smell as he went that was so bad. They don't smell in general as they have a shower every morning *yes with me i know i'm sad

Thanks for the tip i'll try that stuff. Where do you get it? bearing in mind i'm in the uk.

Have you tried ACV (apple cider vinegar) in their water? It aids in digestion. Most use about 1 to 3 tablespoons per gallon of water, with most saying 2 tablespoons per gallon of water. I had noticed improvement in my birds poo when I was giving it to them. Less smell and firmer poo. I only stopped as I am now adding Niacin to the water due to having ducklings with a bit of a tremble in their legs.

Can anyone tell me if you can add both niacin and ACV to water at the same time?

Also, I only just learned about this so I can't say if it will work first hand but check out this thread on fermented feed. I an considering doing some for my own ducks as a portion of their feed. I notice that they mention no smell to the poo and the poo being less runny. My ducks and geese while they are healthy and happy do have runny and also sometimes have quit stinky poo. The thread is in the meat bird section but lots of people seem to be using it for their layers as well. Anyway you might want to check it out. Looks like they use water and ACV to start the fermentation process so it makes the feed more acidic. Either way using ACV in water as I said above or to ferment feed getting more acid in their diet seems to be something that works for making their poo better/less stinky/ firmer/ healthier.

Thank you all for your replies i shall try all your tips and hopefully you have all helped me save my nose

Apple Cider vinegar most grocery stores carry it.

Do you have a Petland near you? They will sell Apple Cider Vinegar. If not you could try ordering online from Omlet.co.uk.

My understanding of ACV isn't that it reduces the smell of duck poo, but neutralises their tummy acids (preventing worms and other intestinal bugs).

To reduce the scent/stench of their poo, some people swear by bran ... I haven't tried it personally. But then, I don't "shower" with my ducks
