I have a question for anyone raising these quails or has had them. Can you tame down Valley and Blue scale Quails overtime? Or are they always skittish? Because I have 37 quail eggs; 12 blue scale and 25 valley quail eggs coming to me from http://www.mmgamebirds.com/. If I work with them a lot and spend most of my time during the day when their babies in till they become adults. Will they still be skittish? I also have a run or pen made out of a dog kennel which I will use to put them in during the day. I put in lots of branches and vegetation. All I need to do is use hardware cloth to wrap around the pen and a net to put on top. Will this make them comfortable and less skittish? Because when they hatch I wanna make them as friendly as possible.

Out of my experience I find quails very hard to tame, even when they are babies. You have to spend a lot of time with them and keep handling them to get them to become tame. Personally, I find all quail skittish - It's just the way they are. However, taming quail can be done but it's easy to start taming them at the earliest age possible. The older ones might be more hard to tame but if you have a lot of spare time on your hands and also plenty of dedicated then you are on the right path to taming them.

Here's some useful tips:

1. Never approach the quail from above or pick them up from above. Quail find that threatening as they have many bird predators that approach them from above.

2. Never pick up the quail unless necessary when you are just starting to tame them. They get even more scared of you then.

3. Offer food out of your hands. Keep your hand still and the quail will come to you but do not chase the quail around with your hand trying to get it to eat.

4. After a while you can soon try picking them up, if they're still scared then let them go immediately.

You will probably have to repeat these steps for a while until they become tame, hopefully this helped.
