Keep in mind that the darkness of the egg changes over time and can lighten a lot toward time for a molt. When they first started laying, i thought i could tell my eggs apart, but i have found that none of them lay exactly the same every time, and i have given on up on trying to tell who's who.
If you're trying to tell if a new girl is laying yet though, i have read that you can feel her pelvic bone to find out (lots better than the food coloring method
). You see how many fingers you can fit between the (warning, technical term) pokey outy bones. I believe if they're laying, you can fit 2 to three fingers in between. If they're not laying yet, the space will be much smaller.
