Can you use ashes from an outside fire pit for a dust bath?

I am trying to figure out what to put in my dust bath & I read that you should add ashes from a wood fire place, so I was wondering if I could add some ashes out of my dad's big fire pit outside? He mostly burns yard stuff put occasionally paper. Or should I just stick to a wood fireplace ash?
