Can you use cayenne pepper around chickens?

Can you use cayenne pepper around chickens? I know they put it in bird suet. I have had success in the past on keeping raccoons, rabbits and opossums from digging under our fence.
 
I think you can, Ive heard it keeps cats from using flower beds as litter boxes too
 
Yes, you can even mix into feed as high as 10% of total and birds will consume it just fine. They do not seem affected by the "hotness". Will also impart as deep yellow to orange color to yolks of birds eating large amounts of the stuff.
 
Up here in AK lots of people put it in their chicken's water to keep them laying through the winter.
