Can you put permenent marker on the eggs? I heard that the chemical componants in the marker could hurt, even kill the chicks.

I do and havent had problems with it killing chicks...what has killed chicks for me is having crappy incubators lol. Now that i have a cabinet incubator all the world seems right

they say though that the strong smelling markers are no good as the fumes can hurt the chicks. I use nontoxic ones that have barely any fumes

pencil will work just fine. Those permanent marker fumes give me a headache .

I have seen sharpies used often on eggs with no problems.

I seem to be the one that kills my chicks. Dh says I candle to much. I won't touch this batch until day 12. Then again at 18. If my hatch turns out better I guess DH was right and he gets his backrub. LOL

well i have 2 chicks hatched that had numbers written on the egg in sharpie and they are doing just fine here is proof
this is where you can see where the chick pipped right on the marker/sharpie mark

I quit using those felt tipped pens .
I had a complete batch of 126 eggs not hatch.. I had written a quite a bit of information on each egg, which bird layed egg , dates of set and hatch etc.. I cannot say for sure that is what killed the eggs, but I heard that information about fel tipped pens after that disaster. I switched to pencil..

I figure it this way, why take the chance? just to prove sombody wrong?? that is not important to me..what is important is a good hatch of some (sometimes) very expensive eggs.. Not to mention my time with a wasted hatch..

so you magic marker users out there, keep using them. just do not try to convert me..

in fact I only mark the eggs that I find it necessary to mark with a single letter.. the rest of the information is in a note book or on my large block calender..

I can tell you exactly where each of over 200 eggs in my sportsman is and that cuts down on the time I have to hold the bator open to find the eggs I need to remove..
