Is it possible to candle brown eggs? The color of my egg shells is so dark that I doubt that I could see anything. Today is day five. So I guess tomorrow I should candle. Any ideas?

If they're that dark it's better to wait until day 10-12. That way you can usually tell by how much light penetrates the shell, even if you can't actually see the blob. That's what I do for my Marans eggs.

That is what I do with my Maran eggs too. I was never able to see veining, just could tell when 1 hadn't developed and when there was a good sized chick in them.

Candling at any point during incubation is really not any kind of necessity. About 99.9% of it is done just to satisfy our curiosity. At least that's why I do it so often. It almost never benefits the eggs in any way. So if you can't see into them it's nothing to worry about.

I would guess that another reason to candle at least at day 10 would be to see if there is a problem brewing and try to head it off. A seeping egg, or dead egg that could explode might potentially be avoided by candling. Candling daily probably not the best idea.

My first time hatching I candled every day from 4 -18 and had a great hatch rate.

This is my second batch. We have one pipping now. I have candled just about every day since day 4 on these too.

I have my first BCMs in the bator and I cant see a thing but a mass in the eggs....hoping by the above posters posts on marans that that is a good sign there is a chick in there....?

I have this issue too. I have maran eggs which are dark brown and have no idea how large the mass should be. All I can see is the air pocket. I check mine, but when I don't see anything I just put them back in the incubator.
