What is this and how is it done?

It's a way to see if there is any developement in a fertilized egg or just a way to check to see if a egg is fertilized. You just hold a flashlight up against an egg....or a candle I guess if you want to do it that way.

If works best if you cup your hand around the light to direct it through the egg. I can't imagine doing it with a candle!
