Hello all,

I am incubating goose eggs for the first time and I have nine eggs in the 'bator. Last night was day 10 and I candled 2 eggs with excellent veins. The remaining 7 eggs have a reddish, cloudy haze in them. A couple have visible dots in the haze. I did candle on day 7 with the same results (the same 2 good ones had veins and the other 7 had red haze). At that point, I was kind of pretending/hoping that the haze was an embryo at an earlier stage of development, but at this point I think that's just wishful thinking and the haze is probably flocculent badness ....

I am inclined to say that I have 2 good eggs and 7 bad ones, but I am loathe to discard any prematurely. Do I run a major risk of contaminating the 2 good ones by waiting another few days to give the bad ones a chance to "come to life?" (I know, I know, wishful thinking ... But I was really hoping for a trio, ha ha!)

Thanks all!

Candled again last night (day 11) -- looks pretty clear to me that all the eggs that aren't obviously good, are bad. :/ Will have to discard them tonight ... Hey, two is still better than none, right?

Hi,
I'm totally new to this so don't take my advice for granted. I have an incubator guru who has hatched out chicks and quails for 15+ yrs. he candled my goose eggs at day 15 ish. At that point we discarded 3 of the 6. They were just clear with a haze as you describe. I cracked one and sure enough it was bad.

I currently have 2 of the 3 left. One I'm not sure about. It has a strange air space. The other I'm not sure either but looks better. I'm on day 32 so not sure. Soon know either way

Good luck
Sarah

Thanks for the reply, Sarah! (BTW, the woman who I got the eggs from is also named Sarah, so I had to look at your introduction post to see if you might be her -- but I can see that you are posting all the way from Scotland! :) )

The two eggs that I have that are good are most definitely good -- huge network of veins, just like you see in photos. The remaining 7 are hazy.

I was thinking of cracking one open to confirm, like you describe -- think I might do that before I toss all 7.

Good luck with your eggs!

Remember to crack it outside incase it stinks! I made that mistake once b4, not a happy hubby!!

Gd luck

Ha ha, thank you :) That is exactly what I did (out in the woods, in fact), and the two I picked didn't stink at all, but they were definitely not fertile.

Because they weren't rotted yet, I think I may give the other 5 questionable eggs some time to "come to life," but I'm not holding out a lot of hope for them ...
