So I've got some blue eggs that have been under a broody hen. Today she took her babies and quit the nest. One little guy hatched on his own (was in the process of hatching when his mama left, so I brought him in under a heat lamp) and the rest of the eggs still have visible veins but no movement. My broodies were stealing eggs from each other for quite a while, so they've been through a rough time as it is. One had no air sac visible tonite, so I scratched away a little of the shell to get a better look and it started oozing- I figured that one was a dud for sure. The rest, I don't know. They've gotten cold a few times, today being one of them. One chick from this group hatched a few days ago and didn't make it. I found it under mama with a terrible smelling yolk sac. I had opened one from the first round of eggs (this is the third, technically) and it was perfectly formed, just never pipped. I'm wondering if the temperature drop killed him and, most likely, the rest of the blue eggs too. Wouldn't the veins have collapsed or disappeared by now?
