I have a can that went out of date a month ago, and was going to feed it to the girls, It has carrots celery peas and potatoes.

Can they eat canned potatoes? I will heat it and serve it warm, But I thought I read no potatoes, or was it peels from potatoes?

Yes I guess peals are a no, no, (cooked potatos yes) but if that was the case my chicken would have been dead a long time ago. They are always in my compost pile rooting around.

People keep talking about potato peels, but honestly mine eat them whenever they happen to be in the bin. No probs ever. There is a chemical compound in peels which, if you gave them nothing but that every day for lifetime, might be a prob. Personally it hasnt troubled me or my birds.

While we love our backyard chickens and want what's best for them, it never hurts to remember that they are essentially happy scavengers, omnivores, and live on garbage dumps, compost heaps and in rusty, woodpile-laden, mosquito-pooled, communal backyards all over the world, with grace and style. To me, that's the whole darned point.

You cant tell me Irish chickens, for instance, never ate potato peels. Any Irish folks out there who want to chime in?

Thanks,
Glad to know they can eat cooked potatoes, Too bad I just tossed mashed potates I bet they would like to make a mess with that LOL. I will try the veg all and see how they like it.

I wonder if it is the same with baked potatoes skins??

you want a mess try giving them some cooked oatmeal and yougurt....they love it!!! They end up looking like a babies face after a big meal. And all the happy squawks make it worth it.

There's only one reason I go easy on the canned veggies...the sodium content. Most canned veggies are full of salt, but as an occaisonal thing I'm sure it's fine.
