The 9 silkies are still alive and well. I haven't killed any of the cockerels yet. I removed the guy who decided to try sleeping on his own, he's now in a dog-crate in the some-what warmer workshop building next door.
My current theory is that the first one froze to death in the night after ditching the pile, and this guy's following the same path for whatever reason. It's not a strong theory, but it could explain why there was no sign of struggle or anything amiss beforehand.
I'll still be setting up a camera once it arrives in the mail and will continue to check in on them frequently.
