CANNOT FIGURE IT OUT

I have a Buff Orph about 3 years old, adopted---to follow are her symptoms.

Has never layed (previous owner did not know if she had or not)

Has loss weight

Somewhat inactive

Empty crop

Stands with her head close to her body

I know if could be a million things, but I cannot figure it out. The rest of the flock is as normal as can be.

This morning, she wanted to stay in the coop, and I carried her out, she had a bit of watermelon and then found a shady place to stand all hunched up.

I have been unable to see her poop, which I know is a good indication of what the health issue is.

Anyones advice would be great.

* Can't say for certain, but, she may have an impact of something below the crop. One thing is for sure-- You need to start some treatment. WATER, ESPECIALLY. Electrolytes, vitamins, and you might give even Cynthia's olive oil, bread and buttermilk treat treatment a try. Others will chime in, too.

* Just realized that I forgot to say b/f that your hen should be brought in for observation. That way, she's isolated from the rest in case she is contagious and you can readily observe her poo and water/feed consumption as well. You can also examine her more closely and decide a course of treatment and see how well it works.

Have you dewormed your chicken? She sounds like she may be wasting away due to worms sapping the nutrients from her body. It certainly can't hurt to deworm her, at least as a precautionary measure.

at 3 years old it could be several things.

bring her in and observe droppings (if any),,please describe droppings..color and consistency.

feel "belly"...is it swollen? hot? hard?
check vent for discharge.

follow suggestion for water and vitamins...
if she won't drink..you can use Poly-vi-sol liquid baby vitamins (not the one with iron)..3 drops in beak once a day for a week then taper off.

if possible, take a fecal sample to vet for worm/protozoa test...
could be cocci and/or worms,
and may need antibiotic..

is the comb pale or shriveled?
has she been wormed?
if so when? and what was used?

could also be EYP..

check eyes for wetness, drainage or swelling
check for wheezing or any breath sounds.

Thank you all so much for your input.

I did bring her in and observe her. I did give her electrolytes and on Saturday morning she was back to her normal self.

I'm wondering if she is getting into something in the yard that just doesn't agree with her.

I will keep you all posted, and thank again for your concern and responses.

I sounds like she may have been dehydrated for some reason. You did good!! Hope she continues to mend...
