Searched high & low for food grade DE locally with no joy. TSC & my local farm supply didn't even know what I was talking about (no big surprise)............ Orschelin Farm & Home does carry a product for horse stalls called "Stall Dry" that appears to do the same thing as food grade DE. Has anyone here on BYC used "Stall Dry" in the pine shavings on their coop floor?

I have heard people here talk about stall dry and they love it. I have heard you need to be careful because there is another product called "stall dri" that is not the same thing and in some way not as good. Also I had to order DE from the internet. I ordered a 50 pound bag. The cost of the product was about $25 and the shipping was about $25 too. But I have been keeping chickens for over a year and have not even gone through 1/3 of the bag. So to me it was worth the $50. I can't remember where I got it because it was so long ago but it's out there if you want it.

off topic, can you feed "food grade" DE or just use it in the coop. I know its meant for gardeners to use on food vegetables while there growing but can you feed to chickens?

Thanks folks for your help! Looks like I may just buy it on the net......... Shipping is crazy, but like someone pointed out, it lasts a long time. Don't imagine I'll need a great deal for my 6 Golden Comets in their 6' x 8' coop............... Of course we all know how our peeps tend to multiply!

I use Sweet PDZ which is the other competitor to Stall Dry.

Sweet PDZ is 100% organic and helps compost your pine shavings. Chicks can also use it as grit if ingested. It helps with the odor and is a wonderful product. As for a direct comparison to Food Grade DE there are some obvious differences when it comes to pest control that DE has and Sweet PDZ does not. It just boils down to what product you're going to buy vs. what need you have.

I also can not get Food Grade DE locally so I'll be doing without. But I can also do without the extra precautions I have to take as a result of using DE. Good luck on your search!
