My chicks are waiting at the feed store and the highest I can get the temperature is 83 how can I get it to 95. The lamp is right on the wire. HELP

Trust me it will be fine mine didn't like it at 95 they liked it round 75for the cool area and 85 for the warm area they will tell you if temps are right or not if they are all huddled up under the heat lamp they are to cold as far away as they can get they are to hot playing and peeping all over the place it's just right.

I just bought some chicks yeaterday. When I got home I put them in the cage outside with my other chicks and they are just fine. I bring them in at night but I no longer use heat lamps. It is getting in the low 80"s here in the daytime. I only use heat lamps when they are newly hatched for a few days and at night when it's below 72.

I put a heat lamp about 18" above the floor of the brooder, I think it said 90 degrees sometimes...but mostly I just make sure the heat is over 1 corner of the brooder and have watched how they act (they're 4+ weeks now, got them around 1 week old). They never laid right under the light, mostly at the edge of it when they'd sleep and they never huddled. I haven't really been checking to make it 5 degrees cooler each week, but I do leave a window open a bit so they get fresh air and the room gets cooled.
They are feathering just fine and haven't acted to cold or hot and generally act like chickens!

What size is your heatlamp bulb? They go as high as 250Ws (just make sure the housing is rated for it). They also have 150s, 100s, 75s... I'm guessing you have a smaller wattage. If you have ANY wire openings around the side of your brooder, then wrap cardboard pieces around the sides. Or, as someone else suggested, use two heat lamps. Do make sure that the thermometer is directly under the lamp. That's where you want it to be @95, and the rest a bit cooler so that they have places to go if it IS to warm for them. It does depend on how old they are too...if they're just a few days old, you will want it close to 95. But if they're a week or two old, probably 85 or so would be okay. Their behavior will let you know. If they tend to huddle quite a bit under the lamp's rays, it's not warm enough. But if they spread out for resting, then it's fine.

try getting the lamp closer to the floor of the brooder, a larger wt bulb mihgt be your best bet...

mine dont like 95 though, when they arrived i had it at 98 as directed by hatchery they didnt like it, and i turned it down ended up being about 88 there now about 6 days old and right around 80 degrees.
i just watched them...

I never use a thermoter, It drives me nuts! I go on chick behavior alone... If they're huddled, they're too cold, if they're all over the place they're fine, if they're moving to the coolest end of the brooder and panting, too warm. Its the only way I do it, and I never lost a chick!

I've been taking care of mine the same way; I just see how they react to the heat. Sure sometimes they like to be under the heat lamp, but for the most part, they just hang around in the middle area.

I don't think it matters if it's exactly 95 as long as they have the option of getting warmer if they want.
