So last night I turned the brooder light off completely because in a week my 5 week old chicks will be moving outside and I wanted them to get used to darkness.
After one minute of peeping they promptly fell asleep and didn't wake up until I turned the light back on this morning.
On top of that I took them outside for a few minutes and while munching on some clover they suddenly all ran straight for a bush to hide.
I couldn't figure out what spooked them but when I looked up there was a hawk gliding stealthily along.
Not only did my chicks sleep through their first scary night in the dark but they were smart enough to know a hawk was bad news and hide even though they've never seen one before.
I realize these are all instincts but I can't help it. I'm still proud.
