I have nine 5 month old Narragansett turkeys I am raising free range. I have a 10 acre vineyard. My neighbor (a very nice family) came to my house today and let me know my turkeys are wondering off into his property during the day and making a mess on their driveway. He wanted to know if there is any way I can try and keep them away? He also owns 10 acres but he runs a horse facility. He said the turkeys dont bother the horses at all but he doesnt like cleaning up after them.

I am torn because I want to keep them but not at the sake of caging them (they do have a enclosed roost house they go in at night that I shut)....anyone have any ideas???? HELP!!!

All that comes to mind is that if you totally free range them (no fencing at all) they ARE going to wander over there repeatedly. The only way I can think of to keep them from doing that is to fence them somewhere.

I wanted to keep them free ranging so you could see them in different locations...vineyard, front grass, backyard ect....plus they fly great. I would have to clip their wings I guess? I dont really have the room to have a outdoor pen becasue most of the property is my house and vineyard.

A fence is the only solution I can think of....either a pen, or property fence, but they will probably go over it.

Just keep in mind they are "a very nice family" now, but they have voiced concerns, so now the solution is yours to come up with. Or they may not stay so "nice"....

Your turkeys may not be doing any damage or harm...yet....but how would you react if the neighbors dog "harmlessly" came onto your property (repeatedly) and made messes.

You need to pen them until you can come up with a better solution of "free range"....

personally I would warn you once, then I would be having a BBQ.

I wonder if the BBQ idea would work? I mean if he takes to shooting one or two would they get the hint and stay away? My lab got a hold of one when they were young and now they stay away from her???? They dont apear to be very smart though.....duh!!!

We had the same problem with our Royal Palms and eventually had to sell them b/c of it. The real bad thing about it is that they will happily get on top of cars as well. We had to keep ours in a coop which I hated to do, so I sold them. Peafowl did the same thing - only they would get up on the neighbors roof and yell all night long! I wish I knew why these larger birds are so obsessed with the neighbors

Sounds like you need a good fence, plain and simple.

No room for a fence in the scenery, then maybe it's time for the turkeys to depart.

No magic solutions here.
