Help? I have a beautiful coop for my three girls, with an attached run (3x6'). I generally let the girls out in the afternoons into a penned in area of the yard to forage for bugs, etc. This keeps them off of my patio, and out of my garden. The fenced in run is L-shaped, with a 16x15 square and then a 30x5' "alley" behind my deck. The issue is that the girls use the coop as a ladder to hop over my yard fence, or simply out of their run and into the other parts of the yard. I've clipped their wings, and we haven't had an issue with them going into the neighbor's yard in a few weeks. (The neighbor has two very LARGE dogs...who would probably love to snack on my birds.
)
Anyhow, all that to say...is there anything I can do to discourage my girls from roosting on top of my fence? In public places, they use broken glass or tack strips...but that seems awfully cruel for an essentially flightless (and chubby) bird! Should i just stand outside and spray them with a hose when they go somewhere I don't want them to?? Or just build more covered runs (attaching them to the existing one) and have them be contained 100% of the time? I have an incredibly small backyard, in a rural suburban area.
