My husband and I bought a house last November with 1 1/2 acres. I have been reading up on how to take care of chickens. I just got the bookChick Days for absolute beginners by Jenna Woginrich and it is very helpful. First thing to do when the weather breaks is get a coop ready for chickens. We are going to divide half of our shed for that purpose. So we have some carpentry to do and neither one of us know anything about it. Lol But with our daughter in laws help we should get it done. I worry so much about predators especially small ones. I already know we have had a rat in the shed. Any advice will be appreciated. I am looking forward to having chickens. I know I will love them!

Start by putting mouse traps in there until you get the hens.Need anything else?

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join to our flock. Be sure and use hardware cloth instead of chicken wire as there are too many predators that can either tear through chicken wire, or squeeze through the openings in the mesh (like rats). There is a good article at http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2013/07/11-tips-for-predator-proofing-chickens.html on predator proofing your chickens. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your coop built.
