I just came back in the house after catching two roosters while they were on the roost. I searched on this forum
for info on catching them. All I could find was "just catch them while they roost. Not much detail.
For those who want to know it is fairly easy. The first one I grabed at his sides holding his wings close to his body. He struggled(sp) some
until I held him by his legs upside down. Got him in the cage and went in after the other one. I had a LED
flashlight I used to locate this one and turned it out. Eased over within reach of him and just grabed him by his legs and turned him over
right a way. He was calm as I put him in the cage with the other one.
Fairly simple process. I did use that flashlight to locate the birds and then turned it out.
Once you do one or two you will see how easy.

It is a little intimidating! Good to post this information.

I swear, my rooster gets me to believing that he IS:rolleyes: bigger than me. In the dark at night, they are nearly in a coma, and easy to handle

Why bother to turn them over? I catch my roosters after dark for their health checks and hold them as I would any other chicken, like a football. They are as docile as can be, even once I get them in the house.

Holding them by their legs inhibits their breathing, if not done properly. A chickens anatomy is not like ours; their lungs are closer to their back than the front. Holding them upside down can cause pressure to be put on their lungs from their other organs.

Just MHO.

Look at all the organs below the lungs on a chicken. Hanging upside down, all organs are going to be pressing on the lungs:

thanks for posting the diagram, I've only had chickens for about a year and have never really seen the chickens anatomy.

When I read the title of this thread, I thought it was going to be about something entirely different!
