Cats?

We have a small,30x50 feet, fully fenced yard and we usually let our chickens and ducks out to roam all day, putting them in their run at night and when we leave the house. This morning the kids saw a neighbor cat in the yard while the chicks were out in the yard(the chicks are about 3-4 months old). We have left them in the run since seeing the cat, but I would like to know what to do. I don't want to deprive the animals of their foraging, but also do not want to jeopardize their safety! How big of a threat is the cat, and what should I do? Thanks to all!

Are they small breed chickens? A cat isn't a big threat to full grown large fowl but if hungry they'll even kill and eat one of those. They're especially dangerous for small birds.
Do you have any other predators where you live?
Dogs, hawks, coons, possums and fox are much worse for chickens.

My chickens used to chase my cat, but they were fully grown. If it's not a stray cat that is starving for food, I would say it is not a big deal as long as your chickens are big enough to defend themselves.

Ok, thanks! They aren't fully grown yet, but close to it. No other predators to worry about really. We do have hawks, but our yard is so small they couldn't dive down between the houses very easily. I know the cat. It belongs to the neighbors two door down. Pretty sure its not starving! Thanks again!

Befriend or trap cats and take them to the pound.Cats,like dogs,should not be permitted to roam.Fences or cat enclosures should be used.I have cats and dogs.It is not hard to keep them in my yard.I do not fret over roamers or argue with irresposible pet owners.I just take care of the problem.Take care of the problem before they do damage.

If you aould rather tolerate it then get a squirt gun.

we have 4 month old pullets and 2 cats. They get along just fine and have been hanging out together since the chicks were 2 months old. Our cat has been known to kill things she has a medical problem that leaves her hungry all the time, still not getting real close to the chicks.

my cats are no match for my killer chickens... one of them tried it one day and got a peck to the nose that bled. dont think he will try that again.. as long as the cat isnt starving and desperate for food they will learn quickly that chickens are not to be messed with...PLUS, if you have chickens,plural, they usually dont mess around.. my chickens actually chase the cats now if they even get close.
i would never recommend trapping the cat and bringing it to the pound..unless it is a lone, feral cat that is starving it is obviously someones cat and has the right to roam just like your chickens do.. they will be friends in no time im sure..if not friends then at least tolerable of each other. now my cats just sit on the fence watching these amazing birds walk around and dont try to attack anymore.
